For more than thirty-five years I have been a professor of Health Science at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). My responsibilities have included Director of the Health Education and Master of Public Health Programs, classroom instruction in the areas of environmental health and safety, family and behavioral health, and the coordination of a variety of community based programs. A significant part of my professional life at the university involves a very strong commitment to service to the community and to the health education profession. For more than ten years I have conducted a variety of community based workshops and seminars on the use of behavior modification for parents of developmentally disabled children. I have also served as an advocate for families of disabled children, enabling them to obtain health care and educational services in the greater Los Angeles area. In August of 2006 I became Associate Dean of CSUN’s College of Health and Human Development. In that role I was responsible for managing student enrollment, administering college student support services, shepherding curriculum development, reviewing grant and research applications, overseeing the College’s academic centers, and carrying out student disciplinary proceedings. Having returned to my first love, that of teaching, I am now back in the classroom hopefully inspiring and being inspired by the young minds that will be the future leaders of tomorrow. I invite you to visit with me, either in the classroom or my office, and let’s discuss how we can shape the world to come. |
WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER PUBLIC HEALTH AND HEALTH EDUCTION YOUR PROFESSIONAL PASSION. |
All too often I hear students longingly ask a simple question "How can I make a difference in a world so filled with pain and suffering?"My answer is equally simple "Join the public health team and watch meaningful change occur right before your eyes."The power to correct the wrongs in our society comes from the all mighty word. Whether as a classroom health teacher, a public health educator, or a community health organizer each of us in our professional lifetime can be responsible for saving tens of thousands of lives, for preventing literally hundreds of thousands of lost sick days at school and work, and inspiring an equal number of others to live a more healthful life each and everyday. |
