"I touch the Future. I teach." -  Christa McAuliffe

There are heroes among us – and you may be one of them; you may be a future teacher. The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program at California State University, Northridge paves the way for a California Teaching Credential, and our teacher preparation program meets California’s single subject waiver program in Family and Consumer Sciences/Home Economics. Graduates are prepared for the secondary credential program and are ready to inspire wherever they go.

Learn from Those who Know...

All students in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education program receive guidance from faculty advisors who are mindful of students’career goals. The curriculum provides a comprehensive background in child development and guidance; family living and parenting education; consumer education; housing and interior design; food and nutrition; textiles and apparel design and merchandising; individual and family health; and leadership.

...and Become one Who Knows.

Opportunities for leadership, networking and potential lifelong professional relationships are presented through participation in the Family & Consumer Sciences Speakers’ Bureau. Further opportunities present themselves through membership in The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), The Home Economics Teachers Association of California (HETAC), as well as through student teaching at local schools.

Students develop competence in the eight career paths relevant to teaching Family and Consumer Sciences. Students may also work with middle and high school students on selected projects.

Extend Your Reach...

Career opportunities for teachers are abundant due to the state’s renewed focus on education. The need for professionals in all areas of the field is also increasing steadily as the need for quality education becomes more apparent. Our graduates have found success as:

...and Touch the Future.
