The Apparel Design and Merchandising program at California State University, Northridge combines design technology, business strategies and fashion merchandising to equal success for our graduates. Our comprehensive approach to apparel manufacturing, processing and merchandising techniques, and textile product quality control prepares graduates for unlimited career opportunities in all aspects of the apparel and textile industry. Students may choose to specialize in apparel design and production, merchandising or textile science.

All students in the Apparel Design and Merchandising program receive guidance from faculty advisors. Courses are chosen to integrate the educational experience into promising careers.

Opportunities for internships, networking and potential lifelong professional relationships are presented through Trends, the apparel student organization, and through association with professional organizations such as the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA).

An essential part of the educational experience in the Apparel Design and Merchandising program is the Academic Internship. Professional practice in the chosen career field gives students experience on which to base their futures. Internships, for which students earn credits toward the degree, may be fulfilled at sites such as The LA Mart, major department stores, design showrooms, textile and apparel manufacturers, textile testing labs, museums – options are plentiful.
